Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Friday, August 17th, 2012

The adage, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” is thought to bring good luck to a bride and happiness to her marriage. You can incorporate these wedding elements in many creative ways.

Wedding Shoes

Your wedding dress can serve as any of the four special elements. While many brides wear a new bridal gown, you could opt for a vintage one if it fits with the style of your wedding or borrow a wedding dress from your mother, friend or relative. Wedding dresses are not required to be white or ivory, so a blue bridal gown is an option that will be fresh and imaginative. Even blue bridal accessories, such as jewelry, a garter or wedding shoes, will fit “something blue.”

Wedding Tradition

For “something old,” vintage jewelry is great way to incorporate this requirement. Online auctions are often a good place to find antique earrings, estate necklaces, bracelets, vintage brooches and antique hair accessories. A local antique store is also a great source for vintage jewelry. Just make sure that whatever you choose complements your wedding theme and style of your bridal gown.

“Something new” is pretty easy to achieve. If you are not wearing a new dress, you almost certainly have a new piece of jewelry or pair of shoes. If these are all old or borrowed, you can wear new bridal panties or pantyhose to serve as something new.

Blue Silk Garter

“Something borrowed” can be just about anything. Ask your mother, grandmother or sister for a classic piece of jewelry – a pearl necklace, a pair of pearl drop earrings, or even a diamond watch. If your mother or grandmother still has her garter, she would likely consider it an honor to lend it to you for your wedding day.

“Something blue” involves a little imagination. Garters often come in blue, but if you really don’t want a blue garter, there are many other ways to add something blue to your ensemble. “Something blue” wedding tattoos are temporary and easily wash off. Blue wedding shoes are a nice option if they look good with your dress and color scheme. If blue simply doesn’t match your clothing or wedding theme at all, you could always wear blue underwear or a piece of jewelry with a small blue stone.

Silk Underwear

Lastly, the “something old” element also calls for “a lucky sixpence in her shoe.” A sixpence is an old British coin that is no longer minted, so it can be hard to find. However, brides can substitute a dime or old penny and even find keepsake sixpence coins at collector shops. You can wear the sixpence taped to the inside upper of your shoes, where you will not feel it. Don’t fall prey to the thought that you need to be stepping on it all day or night!

Dare To Mix Color

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012
Wedding Color Inspiration, Mix Colors

Wedding Color Inspiration, Mix Colors

There is a new trend emerging in the world of wedding planning and it revolves around one of the basic elements of design – color.  Today’s brides are choosing to mix colors for an eclectic elegance, such as navy and peacock, according to Advantage Bridal.  Without the right color balance, wedding decor can look flat or overdone, a problem that stems from matching everything.  But the right color scheme can be powerful and create visual harmony.  Start with the five necessary wedding elements – attire, invitations, flowers, favors and cake – and see where you can or should add more color.  Consider shape, size, texture, color and value (the lightness or darkness of a color).  Then, focus on the details, such as napkins, candles, flower girl baskets, the ring bearer pillow and guest book, which can be made from the same fabric and in the same color as the bridesmaid dresses.  Don’t be afraid to push your comfort zone and play with an assortment of colors until you find the right combination that speaks to you.

Feeling lost?  Color chips at the local home improvement store and sources like the Pantone Wedding help brides coordinate colors and create an inspiration board.  Of course, the color wheel provides a basic foundation for primary colors, secondary colors and tertiary colors.  Choose a wedding palette based on analogous colors, which represents three consecutive colors on a 12-part color wheel, or complementary colors, which are any two colors directly opposite of each other.  The venue, time of day and season will play a role in the overall wedding colors, but engaged couples should also think about the mood they want to convey because color impacts emotion.  Ideas abound everywhere, so look to nature, places, fashion, linens and stationary as a starting off point.  See these 15 tips for choosing your wedding colors.  Advantage Bridal carries Pantone wedding accessories by Dessy so brides can match colors perfectly, and they can also check out our section that features wedding themes by color.

Pre-Wedding Fitness & Nutrition

Monday, March 12th, 2012

For many brides and grooms, too, wedding planning is a reminder to get in shape. Kick starting a pre-wedding fitness routine means you’ll look better walking down the aisle, feel better and reduce stress.

Establish a goal, and give yourself time to achieve it. It’s never too late to squeeze in exercise before the big day. Proper nutrition is also good for glowing skin and shiny tresses. Give yourself 5-10 weeks to set a pre-wedding fitness/nutrition plan.

Crash dieting is never a good idea, experts warn. Instead, focus on reducing body fat and increasing muscle.  You don’t want to be a flabby or “skinny fat” bride.  Tone up your arms since they’ll likely be prominent in wedding photographs.

Most people can safely lose up to 6 pounds per month but if you have more than 25 pounds to lose, experts suggest starting at least six months before the wedding.

Excercise helps reduce stress during wedding planning, but stress can make losing weight more difficult and even cause weight gain. Stay away from high amounts of sugar, caffeine and comfort foods that will slow progress. Reduce carbs, but don’t go below 1,200 calories a day or you’ll have trouble losing weight.

Focus on both cardio and weight training 3-4 times a week, while adding more fruits, veggies, protein and fiber to your diet.

A healthy diet and fitness plan is a lifestyle change and will benefit you after the wedding. Cravings are easier to handle when you don’t restrict yourself to strict diets or rules. Moderation is key, as long as you can burn it off and don’t overdo it.

While it’s important to watch what you eat, you should also make sure you are eating enough so you have ample energy and don’t lose muscle mass. Don’t forget your daily vitamins and supplements to ensure you are getting nutrients that you may not be getting from food alone.

Congrats to all the brides who have begun their pre-wedding fitness and nutrion plan! We know your hard work will payoff. Visit Advantage Bridal for post workout accessories, such as bridal flip flops, bride hoodies and sweats, and spa wraps and robes. Treat yourself to something special like a day at the spa to unwind!

Take Two: Bridal Heels & Ballet Slippers

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

"Tudor Rose" Couture Bridal Flats

We love heels as much any woman and if you’re anything like us, they’re more like closet decorations than every day shoes. But that doesn’t stop us from adding to our collection. Remember Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City? She was a self-proclaimed shoe addict. So while you want to look fabulous from head to toe on your wedding day, high heels probably aren’t the right shoes for an eight hour day. Yes, we all sacrifice in the name of fashion, in the name of looking good, and in the name of our fave designer. But we have a better idea.

Why not select two pairs of wedding shoes? You can wear the couture heels down the aisle and for photographs and switch to ballet slippers or ballet flats for the reception. Better yet, consider wearing an alternate dress, too. Kate Middleton is doing it. We’re not saying you should blow your budget on becoming the bride fashionista of the 21st century. We’re suggesting that you balance your budget so that you can look great and be comfortable after the ceremony, because we know you’ll be dancing the night away to the hits of the 80s and 90s. Ballet slippers add an elegant touch and are available in numerous colors and styles – even the classic lace-up ballet shoes. Think prima ballerina meets modern bride, what a beautiful combination. Check out the Real Weddings blog featuring our ballet slippers.

Celebrity Bride DeAnna Pappas Joins Weddzilla Bloggers

Celebrity Bride-to-be DeAnna Pappas

If you’re a fan of reality TV or “The Bachelor,” then you remember DeAnna Pappas from the 2007 season. The following year, DeAnna Pappas appeared as “The Bachelorette.” The celebrity bride-to-be is now happily engaged with plans to marry  in an Octobor 2011 fall wedding. Look for wedding blogs from the celebrity bride as she joins Weddzilla. Deanna Pappas currently co-hosts the Lifetime television show “Get Married.”

Talk about a reunion: DeAnna Pappas and best friend Holly Durst (a former Bachelor contestant) are engaged to twin brothers – Stephen and Michael Stagliano, respectively. DeAnna became an instant fan favorite on “The Bachelor” and has since made numerous TV appearances and landed on magazine covers. Her blog is going live tomorrow, if you’re interested in following her during the wedding planning process.

Here’s a tidbit from an interview with Weddzilla:

Weddzilla: Describe your wedding vision and your personal style as a bride. For example, do you see yourself as a classic bride, a romantic bride, a non-traditional bride, or a combination of several other elements?

DeAnna Pappas: My wedding vision is very southern but chic. I see it as a rustic but elegant ceremony and reception. My personal style as a bride seems to be very traditional, but with a combination of other elements. I am not giving myself any rules to stick to. If I like something and I believe it fits the theme of our southern wedding, it’s in there!! I definitely want some traditional moments in the wedding though, like the father/daughter dance, my father walking me down the aisle, as well as not seeing Stephen on our wedding day until I walk down the aisle. We are adding our own personal twist by adding some Greek traditions to our ceremony and reception because I am very proud of my Greek heritage.

To plan your own chic wedding in any style, check out the wedding accessories, bridal accessories, wedding shoes, bridal jewelry and wedding favors at Advantage Bridal. The one-stop shop has something for every bride and every wedding!

Kate Moss Engaged: Vintage Wedding Theme

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Kate Moss and Jamie Hince Engaged

Supermodel Kate Moss, 37, and musician Jamie Hince will marry July 2, according to The Sun. Jamie Hince, 40-year-old guitarist for The Kills, proposed with a vintage engagement ring worth tens of thousands of pounds. Wonder if Kate Moss will wear a vintage wedding gown on the big day? The two met backstage at The Kills’ concert in 2007 and now share a home in North London. Kate Moss’ daughter, Lila, will be the “chief bridesmaid.”

Jamie Hince hunted for a diamond engagement ring once owned by the legendary 1920s party girl, Zelda Fitzgerald, who was married to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Although he didn’t find one, he did the next best thing – gave her a Zelda-inspired vintage engagement ring. The newly engaged couple is thinking about throwing a 1920s-themed wedding in Paris, which is where the Fitzgeralds lived. The two were said to be engaged last year, but like all good things, timing is everything. The Sun first reported news of their engagement and we can’t wait to see wedding photos of fashion icon Kate Moss and rocker fiancé Jamie Hince.

Advantage Bridal carries vintage-inspired jewelry for brides, bridesmaids and mothers of the bride, as well as vintage style veils, bridal purses, garters, wedding shoes and wedding accessories. Vintage theme weddings and vintage details add personal flair and are reminiscent of by-gone eras.
