Vintage Weddings, Full of Charm

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Weddings with vintage details evoke classic romance, honor the charm of bygone eras and stir feelings of nostalgia, whether through vintage wedding gowns, vintage wedding accessories or traditions of yesteryear. There’s something about intricate vintage lace, either on a wedding dress, ring bearer pillow or garter. And weaving vintage appeal into your wedding ceremony or reception isn’t hard to do because these small details can make a big impact. For brides who like the juxtaposition of a modern dress with vintage accessories think about how to effectively accessorize – maybe with vintage inspired bridal jewelry or bridal headpieces. Wear a rhinestone brooch, wedding jewelry set, crystal shoe clips, drop earrings or chandelier earrings, or glamorous headpiece, such as a rhinestone barrette, bridal hair comb, bridal tiara, bridal hair pin, bridal headband or bridal feather. Birdcage veils or French net blushers are also a popular choice for vintage appeal. You don’t have to stick to a single style if you prefer just a hint of a classic era. Or, opt to intertwine this concept into wedding accessories like flower girl dresses, flower girl baskets, bridal shoes, bridal purses, wedding veils, wedding umbrellas, guest books, toasting flutes and wedding invitations. A vintage wedding is one that guests will remember and you will, too. Advantage Bridal features many vintage wedding accessories and vintage bridal accessories for a touch of whimsy.

Wedding Etiquette Essentials

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Wedding etiquette plays an important role in planning for the big day, so couples shouldn’t overlook the significance of manners – from wedding invitations to the guest list and from thank you cards to the bridal shower. Emily Post is a great resource for everyone involved in wedding planning or invited to the memorable affair, including the bride, groom, family members and guests.

Even with social media, blended families and other unique situations, Emily Post provides valuable wedding etiquette advice that continually evolves. Founded in 1946, the Emily Post Institute studies the evolution of how manners change over time and vary depending on location and culture. The family business spans five generations. Peggy Post writes The Well-Mannered Wedding column for The New York Times.

Here she addresses a question from a reader regarding bringing the plus-one guest. Being polite and practicing good manners are always in style.

Who Deserves Plus-One Status?

My boyfriend and I have had several heated discussions regarding the etiquette of inviting guests with a plus-one. He thinks everyone should get a plus-one, all other factors aside. I think that only guests in a serious relationship (i.e. long term, living together) should warrant a plus-one invitation. Can you settle the debate?

Monica A., Berkeley, Calif.

Let’s avoid sending either one of you to the etiquette penalty box. Today’s standard plus-one is someone who is married to, engaged to, living with and, yes, in a long-term relationship with the invited wedding guest. Beyond these “must invites,” your plus-one decisions will be based on budget and consistency. If it’s only a few and it’s not a budget buster, you might consider asking them all. But if that’s not the case (and let’s be realistic here), come up with a clear parameter. Even so, without a plus-one invitation, some of your single guests may not want to attend. In the end, that’s their choice.

Note to guests: You didn’t get a plus-one invitation and you have a new boyfriend? Be empathetic and don’t take offense. Be happy that you’re one of the “must be there” people on the bride and bridegroom’s guest list.

Trim Your Guest List

11_14_GuestList

With all the excitement involved in planning a wedding, there are also some difficult decisions to make. And not all of them will be easy. After you’ve officially announced your engagement and picked the wedding date, the guest list can steadily grow without much effort at all, but it should be concrete before booking services or purchasing goods from certain vendors.

So what’s the best way to trim the guest list? An article featured on Brides.com gives helpful advice to couples looking to find middle ground in what can add tension between the couple and the in-laws. The reality is the budget doesn’t always match the wish list, and that’s when engaged couples have to think twice about the lengthy guest list.

First, figure out the general size of the wedding and ideal venue. Are you dreaming of an intimate affair or a large party? To reduce confusion, clarify the extent of your family’s involvement in the guest-list process early on. While each family typically invites half the guests, that formula might change due to financial obligations or when the size of each family isn’t comparable.

Consider whether you will invite children, set an age limit or only allow close relatives to bring their children; this stipulation can be said politely on the wedding invitations. Another option is to hire a babysitter or two to watch the children during the ceremony and possibly after.

Sometimes, sending a wedding announcement in lieu of an invitation to out-of-state guests is sufficient, so don’t feel obliged to send wedding invitations to everyone you know. Set clear limits when cutting down the guest list, without exceptions: For example, no second cousins, no coworkers, no dates or no long lost friends. After finishing the grueling process, keep track of your guest list on the computer or with an at-home filing system. Then, you can move onto your next step in the wedding planning process! Save With A Budget Friendly Wedding

Budget Wedding, Cheap Wedding, Inexpensive Wedding, Save on Wedding

Budget Wedding, Cheap Wedding, Inexpensive Wedding, Save on Wedding

These days, the new trend is not how much you spend on your wedding, but how much you save.  Couples nationwide have proved that it can be done for significantly less than the $27,000 average cost of wedding, without skimping on the details.  Think you can do it?

It’s possible to plan a budget wedding, but you need a plan and discipline to stick to your wedding budget.  Everything else should fall into place.  Remember, the most important aspect of your wedding day is the vows between you and your husband to be; the rest just makes it more special.  The key is to know your budget, stick to it and negotiate with vendors!  They want the business as much as you want what they’re offering.

Planning a budget wedding:

1.  Marry in the off-season on any day but Saturday.

2. Cut the guest list: don’t worry about pleasing distant relatives and acquaintances.

3. Hold the wedding ceremony and wedding reception at the same venue.

4. Larger reception tables means fewer centerpieces and tablecloths.

5. Shop for décor in the off-season or look for great deals with online vendors, such as Advantage Bridal.

6. Use more greenery and in-season flowers.  Skip costly flowers and stick to one or two varieties or go green with potted plants/flowers.

7. Evening weddings cost more and so do dinner menus, but a day wedding with lunch can cut costs in half.

8.  Serve appetizers and drinks rather than the main course.

9.  An open bar equals more money, but a cash bar gives guests the option to drink while footing the bill.  Or, place a bottle of red and white wine on each table and skip the champagne toast.

10.  Serve sheet cake with a smaller, decorated cake for pictures.

11.  DIY invitations (stationary), favors and other wedding accessories take more time, but the payoff is well worth it.

12. Shop bridal trunk shows, revamp a vintage wedding dress or buy a gently used gown for significantly less.

13.  Photographers cost a pretty penny, but there are definitely ways to save here and still get quality photos.  You don’t really need two photographers, which skyrockets costs.  Or ask about using a photographer’s assistant instead.

14.  Look for entertainment vendors willing to bargain.  Many universities have student musicians who can play at your wedding for less than traditional vendors (ask the music department for a list).

15.  Skip the extras!  You might feel like you must have it, but sometimes less is more.

You are only limited by your imagination when planning an unforgettable but budget friendly wedding.  Advantage Bridal is recognized as one of the top online vendors with great customer service and value.  We want you to enjoy the wedding of your dreams. Search our website for wedding ideas and great deals on wedding invitations, bridal accessories, bridal party gifts, flower girl baskets, bridal shoes, wedding flip flops, bridal garters, bridal head pieces and much, much more.  We sell almost everything but the dress!

Wedding Postage: Custom Stamps

Wedding Stamps from Perfect Postage

It’s okay to wish you had done some things differently at your own wedding, isn’t it? Every girl experiences a little wedding envy. So when we saw the royal wedding stamps featuring Prince William and Kate Middleton, we wondered why couples often skip details like this. Custom stamps add that extra punch to wedding invitations, save the date cards and bridal stationary.

Most of us don’t remember the “old days,” or pre-computer era, when sending cards or writing letters on personalized stationary were thoughtful ways to correspond (and they still are). Calligraphy was an artform and letters were sealed with wax. But this was before emails, texts and evites. Who needs a postage stamp when you’ve got your Mac and iPhone to communicate?

Wedding invitations and thank you cards are still essential to the planning process. Invites set the tone for the ceremony and reception, and guests appreciate getting thank you notes for their gift. Have you ever given a gift and wondered if the person received it? We’ll save tips on wedding etiquette for later. Like the famous royal couple, you and your fiancé could use the engagement photos to create your own stamps. Or, monogram stamps with the couples last name are classic. Small details like pretty postage make a big impact. Be sure to include wedding postage in your budget and check websites like Zazzle and USPS for pricing on custom stamps.

Shop for wedding invitations, thank you notes, wedding stationary and DIY invites at Advantage Bridal, the one-stop shop for brides, personalized gifts and all special occasions.
