The bridal shower tradition dates back to Brussels, Belgium around 1860, but it continues to be a popular celebration today. Bridal showers are traditionally a gift-giving party in honor of the bride before her wedding. Primarily a U.S. and Canadian practice, bridal showers are generally given by the maid of honor and bridesmaids. It is usually attended by women, though in more recent years, couples may attend a “jack and jill” shower together. Regardless of who attends, the shower is intended for guests to give gifts for the home or primarily for the bride since the groom generally doesn’t attend. McDonald’s Hong Kong Debuts McWeddings

Hong Kong Couple Holds Engagement Party at McDonald's

For those who haven’t heard, McDonald’s debuted its Wedding Party Services for engaged couples opting for an inexpensive, nontraditional wedding ceremony and reception. McWeddings are officially here and available at three locations in Hong Kong, which also host engagement parties and wedding anniversaries. The basic package starts at 9,999 Hong Kong Dollars (or 1,283 U.S. dollars).

A recent article in The New York Times reports that, in 2006, Hong Kong changed a law to allow for weddings outside of churches or City Hall. And with the annual income averaging $17,500 HKD, many couples save for years or go into debt to get married. This makes McWeddings lucrative for young couples who grew up studying at McDonald’s and who don’t have negative perceptions of the famous fast-food chain, unlike other cultures.

According to a press release, the basic wedding package “covers invitation cards, venue rental, food, gifts for the couple and their guests, basic venue decoration, special games, audio system usage and Master of Ceremonies service. Value added services are available at a charge, such as balloon wedding gown, balloon bouquet, photographer service, etc. Each McDonald’s wedding party can accommodate 50 to 100 guests, and the service is currently available at 3 restuarants located in Admiralty Centre, Mei Foo and Smithfield in Kennedy Town.”

Even the staff at McDonald’s dress in black suits, usher the guests and serve the food during the event. Valentine’s Day marked the inaugural event of the Wedding Party Services at McDonald’s Hong Kong – the media was invited to witness Kelvin Kwong propose to his girlfriend Ashley Tse. Surrounded by 50 friends and relatives, the couple toasted with sundaes, “cut” the apple pie wedding cake and exchanged balloon engagement rings.

A week later, McDonald’s Hong Kong hosted the first wedding ceremony. Approximately 50-60 weddings are currently being negotiated.
