Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Friday, August 17th, 2012

The adage, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” is thought to bring good luck to a bride and happiness to her marriage. You can incorporate these wedding elements in many creative ways.

Wedding Shoes

Your wedding dress can serve as any of the four special elements. While many brides wear a new bridal gown, you could opt for a vintage one if it fits with the style of your wedding or borrow a wedding dress from your mother, friend or relative. Wedding dresses are not required to be white or ivory, so a blue bridal gown is an option that will be fresh and imaginative. Even blue bridal accessories, such as jewelry, a garter or wedding shoes, will fit “something blue.”

Wedding Tradition

For “something old,” vintage jewelry is great way to incorporate this requirement. Online auctions are often a good place to find antique earrings, estate necklaces, bracelets, vintage brooches and antique hair accessories. A local antique store is also a great source for vintage jewelry. Just make sure that whatever you choose complements your wedding theme and style of your bridal gown.

“Something new” is pretty easy to achieve. If you are not wearing a new dress, you almost certainly have a new piece of jewelry or pair of shoes. If these are all old or borrowed, you can wear new bridal panties or pantyhose to serve as something new.

Blue Silk Garter

Blue Silk Bridal Garter Set $44.95

“Something borrowed” can be just about anything. Ask your mother, grandmother or sister for a classic piece of jewelry – a pearl necklace, a pair of pearl drop earrings, or even a diamond watch. If your mother or grandmother still has her garter, she would likely consider it an honor to lend it to you for your wedding day.

“Something blue” involves a little imagination. Garters often come in blue, but if you really don’t want a blue garter, there are many other ways to add something blue to your ensemble. “Something blue” wedding tattoos are temporary and easily wash off. Blue wedding shoes are a nice option if they look good with your dress and color scheme. If blue simply doesn’t match your clothing or wedding theme at all, you could always wear blue underwear or a piece of jewelry with a small blue stone.

Silk Underwear

100% Silk Boy Shorts $25.95

Lastly, the “something old” element also calls for “a lucky sixpence in her shoe.” A sixpence is an old British coin that is no longer minted, so it can be hard to find. However, brides can substitute a dime or old penny and even find keepsake sixpence coins at collector shops. You can wear the sixpence taped to the inside upper of your shoes, where you will not feel it. Don’t fall prey to the thought that you need to be stepping on it all day or night!

Young, Engaged & On a Budget

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Lily, 22, just graduated college and celebrated her accomplishment with more than a graduation ceremony. Her boyfriend, who she met during her freshman year, proposed on graduation day. They’re young, in love and on a tight budget. But like other brides we know, they’re determined to plan the wedding of their dreams in just 12 months. If they work efficiently, that gives them enough time to shop for wedding venues, vendors, bridal accessories, food and cake, as well as learn the dos and don’t of planning this momentous affair. Think Wedding Planning 101. To top it off, Lily’s mom has ideas for the wedding that aren’t exactly in line with hers. Rest assured, there are steps brides like her can take to smooth out the details.

Brainstorm first. Write it all down, including a tentative guest list, possible venues, day or evening wedding, music preferences, wedding theme, bridal gown style, etc.

Set a budget, and stick to it. Become a DIY bride, even if you don’t have a creative bone in you. There are plenty of kits that make it easy to do DIY wedding invitations and DIY favors. A little hard work up front can save in the long run.

Look at the big picture. Prioritize your plan by starting with the big-picture, like the venue and type of wedding. Fill in the details later to see what’s left in the budget.

Stay organized. Search for vendors, setup a website and utilize wedding planning tools on websites such as The Knot.

Make decisions quickly. Being wishy-washy adds stress and can have a domino effect on other plans.

A little etiquette goes a long way. Buy a book on wedding etiquette to easily navigate the process and omit any faux pas. Tips help with everything from the guest list to thank you cards.

Accept good enough. We all want the couture wedding shoes, 2-carat diamond ring and designer bridal gown. But you can achieve the look of luxury without going broke. Pick items that mimic your favorite style and designers. Sites such as The Budget Savvy Bride or The Broke-A** Bride provide useful tips.

Remember wants vs. needs. Do you need it for the wedding or simply want it; paring down this list will cut costs.

Think beyond traditional. Your preconceived ideas may blow the budget, so think outside the wedding box. Marry at a public venue or the courthouse and spend on the reception. Have an intimate ceremony with a larger reception. Combine your ceremony and honeymoon. Serve h’orderves and cake instead of a meal. Skip the alcohol. Rent or borrow a dress. . .

Have a heart-to-heart with mom. Sit down with your mother over coffee and be specific about her involvement in the wedding planning process. Let her know how you feel, that you appreciate her and that your wedding will be different than hers. She loves you and wants the best for you, but you’re all grown up now and this is your wedding after all.

Vera Wang Wedding Dress

Vera Wang Wedding Dress

Bridal couture is within reach, even for bride’s facing a tight budget.  Designer wedding dresses from the industry’s top fashions – such as Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, Alvina Valenta, Lazaro, Carolina Herrera, Badgley Mischka, Ines di Santo and many more – can be purchased or rented for a fraction of the cost thanks to options other than shopping your local bridal boutique or retail shop.  Buy a gently used couture wedding gown or designer sample, or simply rent the wedding dress of your dreams.  These eco-friendly options won’t blow the budget.

If the thought of wearing another bride’s gown makes you cringe, the savings will make you smile and often outweigh the stigma of buying gently used designer garb.  After all, the bride wore the dress for less than a day and you can’t really afford the splurge.  Websites like Recycled Bride, Once Wed and Bravo Bride offer an online marketplace for brides to sell their designer dresses, while Los Angeles-based One Night Affair rents designer bridal gowns.  White Xchange, Encore Bridal and Bride Couture sell sample and gently used designer wedding gowns.  Do your homework and you can find the perfect couture wedding dress that will wow guests and photograph beautifully.  If you don’t want to store your bridal gown and you could use the cash, search local bridal boutiques that offer consignment or find the right website to list your gown.  You can also donate your bridal gown to worthy causes such as Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation.  Check out breast cancer awareness apparel and accessories at Advantage Bridal, including Save the Tatas and our new Fight Like a Girl products.

Royal Wedding Pippa Middleton

We were all a little surprised to see the maid of honor at the royal wedding wearing a gorgeous off-white bridesmaid dress, but it definitely was a crowd pleaser. Along with the royal wedding dress designed for Kate Middleton, the maid-of-honor dress for her younger sister was also designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen. The ivory cowl-neck gown featured laced cap sleeves and row of silk-covered buttons down the back. Paired with Jimmy Choo bridal shoes, custom floral diamond earrings and fresh lily of the valley hair accents, Pippa Middleton was a beautiful maid of honor. Versions of her bridesmaid dress are already hitting the stores, and many think it would be equally stunning as a bridal gown. What do you think? Would you wear this down the aisle?

Kate Middleton Glows in Reception Gown

Catherine Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, wore not one, but two, bridal gowns by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen. Even if you weren’t a fan of the wedding dress she wore to marry Prince William, Kate Middleton’s reception gown was stunning. Simple and elegant! The princess bride was beaming as she headed to the evening reception at Buckingham Palace.

The Alexander McQueen strapless reception gown features white satin gazar with silver diamante embroidery at the waist and a circle skirt, creating a similar silhouette to her wedding gown. Kate Middleton paired it with a cropped angora sweater for added texture and sophistication. Her loosely curled locks framed her face. Amazingly, the newest royal decided to do her own bridal make-up for the big day after taking lessons from an expert :) Wish we could all be that brave! Even if we can’t afford two bridal gowns, we can dream can’t we? Love the idea of wearing an elegant wedding dress with a long train followed by a lovely reception gown to party the night away.

Advantage Bridal carries the perfect bridal accessories to complete your look, whether it’s regal, simple, classic or flirty. If you want to be a princess bride, bridal accessories such as veils and tiaras are essential in creating this look.

The Royal Wedding: Best Man & Maid of Honor

Maid of Honor Pippa Middleton

Everyone is dying to know who will design Catherine Middleton’s bridal gown and all the juicy wedding details, like who’s in the wedding party. It’s no surprise that Prince William and Kate Middleton have chosen their siblings to be the best man and maid of honor – Prince Harry, 26, and Pippa Middleton, 27 (short for Philippa).

Prince Henry Charles Albert David, or Prince Harry, began his military career in 2005. Today, he continues those endeavors training as a helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps. Like his mother Princess Diana, the young prince is also patron to numerous charities whose work he supports and joint founder and patron of Sentebale, which helps children orphaned by AIDS in Southern Africa. He will serve as the best man with Chelsy Davy as his possible date. (Check out Advantage Bridal’s military wedding accessories.)

Pippa Middleton, Kate’s younger sister, best friend and maid of honor, bears a striking resemblance to the future British princess. She is currently hailed Britain’s most eligible bachelorette (Who needs the TV show when you’ve got single socialites!) Little is known about the equally beautiful sister other than the pictures that show up in the British tabloids. Pippa is said to be smart, funny and outgoing. She may also become the lady-in-waiting for her sister Kate (we’ll explore this more next time). Prince William’s friend, Alex Loudon, could be her date to the royal wedding. (For the royal bride, shop the tiaras at Advantage Bridal.)

We’ll just have to wait and see what unfolds when the wedding of the century airs. We’re counting the days until the royal wedding! The two younger siblings would make a cute couple themselves, don’t you think?

Celebrity Couple Reese Witherspoon & Jim Toth Just Married

It’s official, Reese Witherspoon and Hollywood agent Jim Toth married in a small ceremony on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The celebrity couple wed at Witherspoon’s Ojai Valley estate in a “Southern style” affair surrounded by candles and flowers to create an intimate mood, reports Hollyscoop. Approximately 100 guests attended the wedding, including Witherspoon’s two children Ava and Deacon. Reese Witherspoon, 34, and Jim Toth, 40, were engaged late last year and the two were said to have instant chemistry. Toth worked with jeweler William Goldberg to design the perfect diamond engagement ring for his bride-to-be, according to US Magazine. The 4 carat Ashoka cut diamond ring sits on a pave diamond-and-platinum band – just gorgeous!

When photos surface, we expect to see Reese wearing a custom bridal gown by Monique Lhuillier. During her engagement, she was seen shopping at designer boutiques in Paris and L.A. As one of Hollywood’s beloved actresses, Reese Witherspoon became widely recognized after starring in Legally Blonde in 2001. Just four years later, she won an Oscar for her performance as June Carter in Walk the Line. She was formerly married to actor Ryan Phillippe. Congratulations to the newly married couple – we wish you many years of happiness!
