Planning A Wedding Elopement?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Napa Wedding Elopement Photo: Lacie Hansen

Why plan a wedding elopement? Elopements are becoming increasingly popular, as more couples value saving time, stress and money. There’s still some planning involved, but on a smaller scale.

Eloping with your honey means a romantic, intimate affair with one or several witnesses. You can exchange vows almost anywhere and don’t need to secure a venue months in advance. Even courthouse ceremonies can be romantic and captured in photographs.

The bride can shop for an unfussy, simple bridal gown and wedding shoes – both of which can be worn again for special occasions. She can carry a bouquet, wear a cute headpiece and still convey a bridal style; while the groom can wear a suit and dress shoes for a formal look that’s not stuffy.

If you’re planning a wedding elopement, consider sharing a celebratory reception with family and friends after the ceremony. This can be hosted anywhere and can be a relaxed atmosphere. You can forgo the formalities of wedding planning in lieu of a casual reception that still honors all things many love about weddings.

Family and friends will want to celebrate your union together. You can host an outdoor reception with a wedding cake and beverages; an h’orderves (hors d’oeuvre) and cocktail party; a casual brunch with mini wedding desserts; or anything you desire to share your special day!

Planning a wedding doesn’t have to be stressful. There are many ways to plan an intimate ceremony with your honey and share in a joyous reception with family and friends later. Chances are, they’ll be happy for you even if you do elope.

Many venues offer elopement packages. Consider researching elopement ettiquette to avoid any unnecessary drama and ensure your wedding elopement goes according to plan.

If you eloped, we’d love to hear your story. Or, if you have elopement ideas, shares those on the Advantage Bridal Facebook page.

How To Buy A Diamond, Simplified

Proposal Ideas: Engraved "Diamond" Paperweight

Congratulations, you’re Just Engaged! Or, maybe you suspect that your fiance will pop the question soon. Shop rhinestone Just Engaged tank tops or bride-to-be tank tops for creative ways to announce your engagement! In the meantime, the diamond ring is probably on your mind.

These tips are for guys and gals – how to buy a diamond. Some men buy the ring before the proposal, while others wait to shop together. Maybe you’ve done some window shopping first or dropped hints as to what type of diamond engagement ring you prefer, from pear shaped engagment rings to cushion cut diamond engagement rings.

If your just engaged, wedding planning can be an emotional process and brides, especially, can get wrapped up in the emotions when they set out to buy a diamond ring (and bridal gown, too).

Before you step foot into a jewelry store that sells diamond engagement rings, do some research first. Repeat: Don’t step foot into a jewelry store until you’ve researched the 4cs of diamonds or you’ll be at the mercy of the salesperson, who is looking forward to his/her commission. This will save you money and time, but money for sure!

Once you start trying on rings and oohing and awing over the dazzling eye candy, next thing you know you’ll walk out of the store with the first ring you “must have” . . . right now! And your fiance won’t be able to say “no” because he wants you to be happy.

Thankfully, the Gemological Institute of America provides simple tips on how to buy a diamond to take the guess work out of these precious, cherished stones. It’s an investment – you want to get your money’s worth and more, so knowing how to buy a diamond ring is important and shouldn’t just be based on what you LOVE.

First, the GIA’s free iPad app goes into detail about the 4cs of diamonds: carat, color, cut and clarity.

Diamond Carat: Just as a dollar is divided into 100 pennies, a carat is divided into 100 points. For example, a 50-point diamond weighs 0.50 carats. But two diamonds of equal weight can have very different values depending on the other members of the Four C’s: clarity, color and cut. The majority of diamonds used in fine jewelry weigh one carat or less.

Because even a fraction of a carat can make a considerable difference in cost, precision is crucial. In the diamond industry, weight is often measured to the hundred thousandths of a carat, and rounded to a  hundredth of a carat. Diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals. (For instance, a 1.08 ct. stone would be described as “one point oh eight carats,” or “one oh eight.”)

Diamond Color: Most diamonds found in jewelry stores run from colorless to near-colorless, with slight hints of yellow or brown.

GIA’s color-grading scale for diamonds is the industry standard. The scale begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z, or near-colorless. Each letter grade has a clearly defined range of color appearance. Diamonds are color-graded by comparing them to stones of known color under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions.

Many of these color distinctions are so subtle as to be invisible to the untrained eye. But these slight differences make a very big difference in diamond quality and price.

Diamond Clarity: Diamond clarity refers to the absence of these inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rare, and rarity affects a diamond’s value. Using the GIA International Diamond Grading System™, diamonds are assigned a clarity grade that ranges from flawless (FL) to diamonds with obvious  inclusions (I3).

Every diamond is unique. None is absolutely perfect under 10× magnification, though some come close. Known as Flawless diamonds, these are exceptionally rare. Most jewelers have never even seen one.

Diamond Cut: The traditional 58 facets in a round brilliant diamond, each precisely cut and defined, are as small as two millimeters in diameter. But without this precision, a diamond wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful. The allure of a particular diamond depends more on cut than anything else.

Though extremely difficult to analyze or quantify, the cut of any diamond has three attributes: brilliance (the total light reflected from a diamond), fire (the dispersion of light into the colors of the spectrum), and scintillation (the flashes of light, or sparkle, when a diamond is moved).

An understanding of diamond cut begins with the shape of a diamond. The standard round brilliant is the shape used in most diamond jewelry. All others are known as fancy shapes. Traditional fancy shapes include the marquise, pear, oval and emerald cuts. Hearts, cushions, triangles and a variety of others are also gaining popularity in diamond jewelry.

As a value factor, though, cut refers to a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish. For example, look at a side view of the standard round brilliant. The major components, from top to bottom, are the crown, girdle and pavilion. A round brilliant cut diamond has 57 or 58 facets, the 58th being a tiny flat facet at the bottom of the pavilion that’s known as the culet. The large, flat facet on the top is the table. The proportions of a diamond refer to the relationships between table size, crown angle and pavilion depth. A wide range of proportion combinations are possible, and these ultimately affect the stone’s interaction with light.

In early 2005, GIA unveiled a diamond cut grading system for standard round brilliants in the D-to-Z color range. This system, the product of more than 15 years of intensive research and testing, assigns an overall diamond cut grade ranging from Excellent to Poor.

(The above information is provided by the GIA.)

Monogrammed Wedding Cake Toppers With Sparkling Swarovski Crystals

There’s no shortage of wedding cake topper ideas to make your dream cake come to life. While you may have decided on your decadent dessert for the reception, consider personalizing your cake with gorgeous, rhinestone cake monogram toppers.

Though Martha Stewart may have reignited the monogram trend, they have long been a part of history. A monogram letter is traditional and elegant, and accents any special occasion cake.

Monogrammed wedding cake toppers are cherished tokens from one of your most memorable moments and can be used to celebrate future anniversaries. But they’re not just for weddings. Cake monogram toppers make a statement for monumental birthdays, anniversaries, military couples, engagements, graduations, baby showers, First Communion, holidays and any special occasion.

Small details can make a dramatic statement, and a cake monogram topper does just that. You can use a single monogram letter, two monogram letters with an amperstand or three monogram letters. Rhinestone toppers add sparkle to your cake, playfully bouncing off light.

A monogrammed wedding cake topper makes the perfect bridal shower gift, but consult with the bride first to make sure you get the correct letters. She may want a single initial of their last name or his and her initials.

When in doubt, a classic cake monogram topper works with any event and style. They look beautiful sitting atop the cake and the letter/letters adorned with crystals look stunning in photographs. Stop hunting for wedding cake topper ideas, as monogrammed wedding cake toppers are the final touch.

Purchasing Your Bridal Gown, Undergarments and Arranging Alterations

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Let’s face it: every bride wants to look her absolute best on her wedding day, and even the most perfect bridal gown usually requires some alterations to achieve a custom fit.

Selecting your ideal wedding gown is only the first step; buying the correct bridal undergarments are also very important. If ordering your wedding gown, it is usually best to purchase your bridal shoes, bridal bustier (bridal bra) and bridal gown slip as soon as your gown is delivered to the shop, which is typically from 4-16 weeks after your order is placed.

If purchasing from store stock, you can try on bridal undergarments at the time of your gown purchase. If you meet your seamstress at the bridal shop, she can usually help you choose your bridal bustier and advise you on the correct bridal slip for your gown.

Your bridal bustier will lift your bust and also act as a corset, providing a smooth and shapely line and preventing unsightly bulges under your gown. They pull you in at the waist, optimizing your feminine shape.

Many bridal bustiers are available with a very low cut for bridal gowns with a low back. There are bustiers with convertible straps and strapless
styles as well. Bridal undergarments are not usually returnable, so make sure to try them on with your gown before purchasing them or, if ordering online, be sure you have someone accurately measure your bustline, waist and torso. If the cups don’t quite fit, you can always use bra inserts to fill them out correctly.

Avoid a bra cup size that is too small for you, as your wedding day is not the time to be spilling out of your bra or risking an embarrassing malfunction. It’s better to choose a bustier that is a bit too large than one that is too small. Most brides don’t realize this, but your bridal bustier can be altered a bit in circumference for a custom fit.

The correct bridal slip can affect the length of your dress, and may even eliminate the need for hemming, saving you quite a bit of money. Buying your wedding shoes before the dress can also save you time and money in gown alterations. The size heel you wear or style you choose can affect the hemline on your gown. If you want to wait to buy your bridal shoes until after you find the perfect wedding dress, make sure you have an idea of what you want and bring a pair in similar heel height with you when altering your gown.

It is likely that you can rely upon your newly married friends to give you recommendations for the best bridal alternation shops. Word of mouth really
helps. Alterating a wedding gown requires detailed and precise sewing. It is advisable to take your wedding gown to somebody who has many years of experience in restyling and bridal dress alterations.

Usually professional bridal alteration shops are the best option since they have the expertise and the experience necessary to work on such a large and important garment.

There are mainly three types of alterations done.

Hemming to correct the length, bodice alterations and work on the sleeves if you have them. Most bridal gowns cannot be made longer, so if you are on the tall side, you will be ordering a gown with extra length and the manufacturers usually do not do a custom length. They simply add 3″-6″ to the bottom of the gown and you will need to have your seamstress hem your gown with your wedding shoes on.

Most alterations for wedding dresses require two to three fittings. Along with your undergarments, you will need your wedding shoes at the time of your first fitting so make sure you purchase them well before the day of your first appointment.  It is also wise to bring your veil and headpiece, as the complete outfit will allow your seamstress to see the complete ensemble. Bridal veils are frequently altered as well. It’s a wonderful feeling to try on everything in advance of the wedding and know exactly how you will look on your big day. Consider taking your bridal jewelry to your final fitting for this reason.

The cost of altering your bridal gown depends upon the style of the dress and the complexity of work. We advise our brides to get an estimate of
the total cost of alteration from a minimum of two seamstresses. Rush services are usually double, so the quicker you schedule your alterations, the better chance you have of keeping the cost as low as possible. You should start your wedding gown alterations at least 6-8 weeks before your wedding to give your seamstress enough time to complete the job without rushing through it. We know of brides who tell the seamstress that the wedding is a couple of weeks prior to the actual date, just to be safe. Not a bad idea!

Ben Bridge $100K Wedding Contest

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Brides and grooms, you have until February 14 to win the Ben Bridge $100,000 Wedding of the Century. In celebration of the wedding jeweler’s 100 year anniversary, engaged couples have the opportunity to win a dream wedding that includes $30K in jewelry for the wedding party, a cash prize for the ultimate wedding and a honeymoon in Africa.

Simply visit Ben Bridge on Facebook, upload a photo of you and your honey and get friends to vote. We don’t promote wedding contests often, so when we do, it has to be good. This one just might be worth your time!

If you don’t win, and you’re a budget savvy bride looking to throw your dream wedding for cheap, there are numerous ideas and affordable wedding accessories at Advantage Bridal. We carry DIY wedding invitations and favors, as well as discount bridal shoes and reception decor.

Scour flea markets and swap meets for interesting pieces or props for a DIY photo booth. Search local parks, beaches and outdoor spaces for an inexpensive wedding venue. Throw the reception in a grand backyard or club house, which can often be rented for a nominal fee. Visit your city’s website for a list of local parks and beaches that may be available to rent for a ceremony.

You’ll be surprised what you can find with a little research. Buy a gently used bridal gown, sample dress or last year’s styles for even more savings. And you know what? You don’t need a bridal gown at all to feel and look like a bride. Think of all the glamorous styles seen on the red carpet. An elegant evening gown in white, ivory or champagne might do the trick.

It’s the accessories that say “bride.” Add a veil, rhinestone headpiece or bridal hat to a simple white gown. Add a sash, sparkly jewelry and a bridal jacket for more impact. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on your bridal ensemble or venue. A little creativity and imagination goes a long way. . .

Rustic Flair: Western Wedding Boots

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Women's Western Wedding Boots

When former bachelorette star DeAnna Pappas said “I Do” this past fall, she did so in full southern style. Yes, that means she rocked western cowboy boots down the aisle, along with her bridesmaids.
Whether you grew up in the south or you love the rustic southern style, kick your heels off and embrace the country bride within. We adore the casual elegance look on brides and bridesmaids when they mix a pretty dress with some good ole’ fashioned flair!
It’s even cuter when the bridesmaids wear their own style western wedding boots down the aisle, letting their personality shine through.
Brides, even if you’re set on heels for your aisle walk, why not consider swapping them out for wedding boots at the reception? If your budget allows, you might even do a quick change into a shorter and more casual reception gown.
Besides designer wedding shoes and affordable bridal shoes, Advantage Bridal also carries bridal boots (cowboy boots). The best part is they become part of your permanent wardrobe long after the big day and you’ll always have a special memory when you slip them on.
Of course, women’s western boots aren’t just for weddings. They’re an investment accessory for your wardrobe so be sure to choose a design and style you’ll always love. Some of our faves: Art Nouveau Cowboy Boots in black and blue; Sakura in Pink leather boots; and Black Stud Rocker Western Boots.

Wedding Website Benefits

Unique Wedding Website using Blogger. Image: The Budget Savvy Bride

Market yourself, your groom and your wedding with a wedding website. It’s not only a cinch to find a template, publish and share but guests will appreciate the extra effort.

Yes, traditional wedding stationery is still important, such as save the dates, bridal shower invites, wedding invitations and thank you cards. But in the age of iPhones and iPads, having a website can be a time saver for guests.

Why should you have a wedding website? It provides an easy platform for you to share pertinent info with your guests. You can post your engagement pictures, registry, venue/reception directions, vendor links, honeymoon destination, etc.

You choose the design template and what you’d like published on the site, including optional information. For example, share the story of how you and your fiance met (especially helpful for whirlwind courtships) or allow guests to RSVP online. It saves a stamp, a trip to the post office and helps reduce wedding stationery costs.

Many top wedding sites offer websites for free or a nominal fee. It also helps organize guest lists, reception seating and mailing addresses so you can simply print labels for wedding invites or thank you notes.

If you spend a little time up front creating a wedding website, it will save you more time down the road. If a guest leaves for the ceremony without the invite and directions, he/she can simply visit your site on their electronic device and find all the valuable info. It saves you time and your guests.

A simple Google search will direct you to popular free wedding websites, but you can also create your own using sites like Blogger. Make sure you do your research first, so that you don’t find yourself jumping through hoops or paying for something you thought was free.

Brides can register at AdvantageBridal.com for their bridal shower or wedding. Find unique bridal gifts, honeymoon apparel, bachelorette party supplies, and bride and groom gifts at our one-stop shop.
